I have struggled for years with something that many of us take for granted – getting a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately for me, my sleep issues were not simply a side effect of raising my children, but a chronic problem which even prescription sedatives did not fix. The problem with disturbed sleep is that it impacts all areas of your life. Exhaustion can lower mood, increase anxiety, lower immune defence, cause irritability and make completing daily tasks a real struggle which is one of the reasons you can get this missouri medical marijuana card. I was stuck in a rut and willing to try anything when I tried my first ever weighted blanket (by Mela) and it has revolutionised not only bedtime in my household but my entire daily life. I feel compelled to share my story with anyone out there who is struggling with sleep loss, in the hope I can help even just one person. So here is my honest review of Mela’s weighted blankets, which nobody asked for, but everyone needs to read!
1. Get to sleep faster – and stay asleep.
When I first received and unboxed my Mela weighted blanket, I was really impressed by how stylish it was. I opted for the 9kg original double – but choosing the correct size is easy with Mela’s size guide. Something that had stopped me from trying a weighted blanket in the past was the poor design. I felt like all the ones I came across would not fit into my home décor and would stick out like a sore thumb. I love that my Mela weighted blanket fits seamlessly with my bedroom design and looks like part of a normal bedspread. The underside is 100% cotton which makes it breathable and comfortable, and the topside has a lovely soft blanket feel.
So, it looks great, but did it work?
Now, it’s worth keeping in mind that weighted blankets can take some getting used to. I must admit it was strange for the first couple of nights sleeping under one. However, after three nights of using it, I woke up to realise I had slept through the night for the first time I can remember in four years. I was shocked- I generally didn’t have much trouble falling asleep, but I would be awake on average 6-7 times per night every night, only getting around 4 hours of broken sleep per night – and I’d just slept for seven hours undisturbed! And the next night it happened again…
I have been using my Mela weighted blanket for five months now and I genuinely cannot put into words the impact it has had on my life. I’ve even been able to start weaning myself off my prescription of melatonin as the blanket alone settles me enough. My Mela blanket is an absolute essential for me and I always take it with me whenever I go away. I know my story may be particularly lucky, but I cannot urge anyone out there who struggles with insomnia enough to try it for themselves – it has truly revolutionised my night times.
2. Reduce stress and Anxiety
I think one of the main reasons why my Mela weighted blanket worked so well for me is that it helped to calm my anxious mind. Mela weighted blankets are filled with evenly distributed quartz pellets, and the gentle weight they exert is comparable to receiving a hug. In the same way as a hug, the pressure of the blanket uses Deep Touch Pressure Therapy, a calming technique which prompts your body to release serotonin and dopamine, which in turn stimulate the production of melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy). I am a single mother to two sons, one of whom has additional sensory needs, which can be highly stressful. I am always on the go and rarely have time to process this stress throughout the day. I would often lie awake at night worrying about what the next day would bring and how I would cope with it. Now, getting into bed with my weighted blanket at night allows me that hugging feeling. Under it, I feel calm and can feel my anxieties diffusing as though it is a sort of barrier to the real world. It may seem trivial to others, but I think it is this reduction in my anxiety levels which has helped me combat my insomnia. In a similar way, I can imagine a Mela weighted blanket would be extremely comforting for people who suffer with anxiety in general – wrapping themselves up in it whenever they feel overwhelmed could help reduce those anxious feelings. Those who need cannabis products to alleviate their stress or anxiety may order cbd products from an online weed shop.
3. A natural solution – no more pills.
I am someone who tries to avoid taking medicine unless absolutely necessary. I’m not sure why, perhaps it was the way I was brought up. For this reason, taking melatonin was a last resort for me and I resented it. I love that by using my weighted blanket I can naturally boost my melatonin levels rather than having to take supplements.
Moreover, something I realised only recently is the money I am saving by having my Mela weighted blanket. I used to spend around £10 per month on my prescription melatonin for sleep, amounting to £120 per year. For the same price I could buy my weighted blanket, which will last years – it is such a good long-term investment (not to mention they always have sales and discounts running- read to the end for a cheeky discount!).
4. Neurodivergence friendly
I’ve explained how my weighted blanket calms my stresses and anxieties, but what I wasn’t expecting was it to help my son too. As aforementioned, my eldest son has autism which causes him to have additional sensory needs. He becomes easily overwhelmed by certain sounds or textures, particularly the feeling of clothes or food, which can cause him to have emotional outbursts. By total accident, I discovered one day that my son really liked the feeling of being under my weighted blanket when he felt overwhelmed. After some research, I discovered that weighted blankets can be great for people who have autism. There is evidence that they provide a sensory experience which helps to regulate emotional responses. I bought my son his own Mela weighted blanket in the correct weight so that he would be safe using it. He doesn’t sleep under his but finds it extremely comforting when his senses become overwhelmed, and I will often find him cocooned in his blanket reading a book. I wholeheartedly recommend that any parents struggling with a child who has additional needs to try a weighted blanket.
5. Mela is inclusive, risk free and gives something back
If you’ve reached this point and you still need more incentive to try a Mela weighted blanket, then in my opinion you’re crazy! But here’s some more reasons why Mela is a no brainer. For starters, they offer a 30-day risk-free trial period, so if a Mela weighted blanket is not for you, you can return it for a full refund. Mela also has an inclusive weight of weights and size, even suitable for kids aged 3+, so you can get the perfect fit. There may be similar products out there, but Mela has won the Evening Standard’s best weighted blanket award for four years running! Not to mention, purchasing from Mela allows you to give back: every order protects five trees in the Amazon rainforest AND they donate 1% of all profits to young minds.
For all these reasons, I’m crazy about my Mela weighted blanket- and you should be too! And now for the best news…
